I AM STATING IN HOPES THAT OTHER OWNERS AND ADMIRERS OF MR BELLER WILL SHARE THEIR PAINTINGS AND JUST MAYBE, SOME OF HIS RELATIVES WILL SHARE SOME HISTORY ON WHAT I THINK WAS A GREAT ARTIST. I KNOW MR BELLER PASSED IN 1984? BUT OTHER THAN THAT I DON'T KNOW A LOT ABOUT HIM. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN WE LIVED IN SPAIN HE WOULD COME BY WITH HIS DONKEY AND CART AND SELL OR PAINT. SOME OF THE PAINTINGS PEOPLE HAVE DESCRIBED I CAN REMEMBER SEEING AND THE ONE WE HAVE ARE , IN MY EYES PRICELESS, THE CLOWN HAS BEEN IN OUR FAMILY SINCE 1963, SO THAT MAKES HIM 47. I LOVE THE WAY HE FOLLOWS YOU AROUND THE ROOM, THEY SAY TO PAINT A GOOD CLOWN TAKES REAL INSIGHT, YOU IN FACT PAINTING 2 FACES. I COULD GO ON AND ON , BUT I TRULY HOPE THAT OTHER OWNERS WILL POST SO THE WORLD CAN SEE HIS WORKS.

    1. This is a very common pair of paintings by Beller. There are a few different renditions, the lady peeling potatoes, knitting, warming herself by the fire with a shaw or blanket. Would love for you to share .. https://www.facebook.com/bellerart

  2. We also lived in Madrid from '66 til '69 and I bought a Beller. It is a picture of an entrance to Plaza Major. You would be standing in the doorway of the restaurant made famous by Hemingway. The name escapes me. I do know the small bar that's specialty was mushrooms was right there, too. I love it. We were at the exact place so many time while we were in Spain.

  5. (The true 1963 story of the artist, BELLER)
    A TRUE STARVING ARTIST

Mary McCullough’s account of this rare collection of paintings:
During the time my husband was in the United States Navy, stationed at Kenitra, Morocco, Africa, him and I had the opportunity to go to Madrid, Spain in 1963. We went there to purchase paintings from an Egyptian man who had an art studio in the outskirts of Madrid. The Egyptian showed us over 250 canvases painted by BELLER and BASTER. The account given to me by the Egyptian art salesman was as follows: “the artist BELLER is in the backroom, painting canvases for food and wine”. The door to the room where the artist was painting was locked, and we were told we could not meet the artist. There was another artist named BASTER; and I laughed at the name. I asked the Egyptian: “How did the artist come upon to have this name?” He replied, “When we were looking for a name for the painter, the artist told us, ‘any old bastard name will do’.” We left the store with paintings from both BELLER and BASTER. We believe that the two artists were actually the same person. And that BELLER was given the name BASTER by the storeowner selling his works.
Beller’s clown painting can be seen online at http://bacolodcity.olx.com.ph/beller-clown-painting-1960s-iid-60142816
The owner states that the clown painting seen has been appraised for an amount of 7 million dollars.
These paintings were made on very delicate canvases, and all are in their original frames.
Starting August 15th, 2010 a blog was started to find information for the artist BELLER.
This was the information posted: “ I AM STATING IN HOPES THAT OTHER OWNERS AND ADMIRERS OF MR BELLER WILL SHARE THEIR PAINTINGS AND JUST MAYBE, SOME OF HIS RELATIVES WILL SHARE SOME HISTORY ON WHAT I THINK WAS A GREAT ARTIST. I KNOW MR BELLER PASSED IN 1984? BUT OTHER THAN THAT I DON'T KNOW A LOT ABOUT HIM. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN WE LIVED IN SPAIN HE WOULD COME BY WITH HIS DONKEY AND CART AND SELL OR PAINT. I COULD GO ON AND ON , BUT I TRULY HOPE THAT OTHER OWNERS WILL POST SO THE WORLD CAN SEE HIS WORKS.”
This information is about the painting listed above that was appraised for 7 million dollars, the clown.
In the collection we have, there are no clown paintings.
The different works looks to be of the people in Spain. There are beautiful paintings of Spanish women, and those of men at local pubs or bars that may have been centered around where the artist was served his food and wine. This is truly a story of a “starving artist”.

This collection of 7 paintings are extremely rare, and delicate pieces of Art history. For more information, or questions about the artwork collection mentioned, please email us at lukemccullough@yahoo.com We are currently accepting bids at this time for the entire collection imported from Spain in 1963.

  6. I have 3 Beller paintings, one is a copy of a famous painting, the other two is the the old Basque man repairing shoes and the Old Basque woman peeling potatos, though I have seen the same two paintings with the old woman knitting. Beller mass produced these paintings for the troops stationed in Spain in the 60s - 80s and they are quite common. I am a huge admirer of his work, you can instantly recognize a Beller painting by it's style. I would love to see an exhibit of his work one day if someone puts it together.

  9. I have a Beller Clown Painting. Curious if it is worth anything. My estranged grandfather sent it to me when I was 15. He said it was worth something. It looks the same as the one listed for 1.75 million. I can't imagine it's worth that, but it is clearly hand painted and on canvas. If anyone can help please let me know.

    1. Beller mass produced his paintings, they are all "original" oil paintings, but he painted the same scenes and people over and over again. His paintings are valued at $25 - $50 but you can find some online where people are asking $500 - $1000 or more. If you notice, those same paintings have been re-posted to the auction sites over and over again, no one pays that much for a Beller. If it's a Beller, it will be signed, in all caps on the bottom left or right and he has a bit of a waive in his lettering.

  11. The artist is Ignacio Beller, he would sell his paintings off a cart in the El Rastro in Madrid in the 60's - 80's. He made many copies of the same painting and troops stationed at Torrejon De Ardoz Air Base would buy them at the flea market from him and bring them back to the states.

    1. The paintings are worth about $25 - $50 but you will find people posting them on auction sites for $200 - $1000, but this is not how much they are "worth", just what people are asking for them online. The one of the clown definitely is over-priced.

    2. The x was stationed at Terrejon and we lived in Alcala. Beller and some more artist had an apartment they sold paintings out of. I have the Man in the Golden Helmet by Beller plus 5 more from other artist. I sent my parents the set of the old woman knitting and the old man. Oh yes my daughter had a clown but it seems to have disappeared. This was from 1969 to 1971.

    3. I also lived in Alcala and he had an Apartment above me. One day he came to my door and sold me a painting for the about $15.00 and it was framed. It is a picter of the old bridge in Alcala over the river. It has been hanging in my living room for over 53 years. I worked on the base.

  12. true dat... u can purchase just about any of his paintings for under 300. most of them are selling for around 50.00... there is a rumor that beller hung around with a group of artist, including picasso, and that he may have painted picasso himself. if this ever comes to light, than you might get million plus... suggest you just hang on to the ones you have, hand them down a couple more generations,,, they might honor your memory some day. i have his painting of a conquistador................

  21. I've purchased three original Ignacio Beller's oil paintings on canvase although I have seen many of his works and these masterpieces are from the 60's old and delicate I do want to share because each one I've not seen before two man standing in the courtyard reading the bulletin board with briefcase and paper in hand, two boys sitting on the ground eating, and the nighttime view of the village Square. These works could not of been done any better if MichelAngelo or Picasso had done. Why doesn't the art world recognize Ignacio Beller as a Master artist? dennisray1950@gmail.com

    1. The biggest issue was that he painted the same image over and over. If his works were all unique, I expect they would command a much higher price. Add to that he's fairly unknown.

One in particular is of a silver haired man with a thick mustache and long silver beard, it's a masterpiece, my favorite :). Two others are of silver haired men one with colorful turban/other with red hat. All 8 of them are beautiful.

  24. I recently purchased a painting at a thrift store in Alamogordo, New Mexico. It is a mountain river scene with a cabin in the background. It is signed BELLER in the bottom left as many of you have described. I am wondering where the landscape is that inspired this painting. It reminds me of my home state of Oregon but I doubt Mr. Beller ever made his way out to the American Pacific northwest, unless someone here knows something about his travels. I wish to know more about the man and the painting. Contact me at Kevin.bozgoz@yahoo.com for any info you can provide. Thank you.

  28. My father was a close friend of his, and I have thanks to that an innumerable collection of his paintings, from grandmothers and grandfathers, to reproductions of old sheets. I think Beller should be much more recognized, since his way of painting is unique. With the fund of works that I have, I could mount an exhibition, but I don't know how it is done, if anyone knows or is dedicated to art, you can contact me: esbozo94@yahoo.es.

  29. I was a little kid in the 80s and my USAF dad did two tours at Torrejon. I believe we were there when the base was closed. I have what I consider a very unique signed Beller. It is a large oil painting of a shotgun hanging from a mantel, with quail hanging with it. It is mounted in a very unique rustic leaf frame, about 47"wide and 30"high. I have researched for years trying to find a value. We lost the other 6 Bellers in moves and divorces, one was an original of me. Looking for an appraiser.

  33. I have an unframed painting by BELLER that could only be described as a portrait of Christ. It measures 18" x 22". A woman I used to work with gave it to me when she was cleaning out her mother's house. I got it about 10 years ago, and it's still sitting in a closet. I'm wondering if anyone knows if he did religious paintings, and what this might be worth. You can reach me at tomfonrn@hotmail.com
